SIX months of motoring misery are on the way as an extensive programme of roadworks begins at Castle Lane.

The roadworks will take place on Castle Lane West between Cooper Dean roundabout and Ibbertson Road.

They are part of an ongoing programme to improve the Castle Lane West corridor, which is one of Bournemouth's busiest roads.

The work will involve improving the road layout and creating dedicated right-hand turnings between the junction with Ibbertson Road and the Cooper Dean roundabout.

Crossing facilities will be enhanced, cycle and bus lanes will be improved and a slip road leading directly from Castle Lane West into the northbound carriageway of the Wessex Way will be created.

Preparation work has taken around four months and work on the major scheme is now ready to start on Monday.

It will be carried out by Ringway National Contracting and is scheduled to last six months, although wet weather could see this extended.

It is the last planned phase of roadworks for Castle Lane West, although highway engineers are saying that a stretch of road between Ibbertson Road and Crantock Grove is being monitored, with a view to further works being carried out.

The cost of the programme is approximately £1.2m, which is being paid for by the developers of the shopping centres at Castlepoint and on the site of the former bus depot on Mallard Road.

Cllr Robert Lawton, cabinet portfolio holder for environment and transport, said the work would inevitably mean delays.

"Over the next six months we aim to keep traffic disruption to a minimum in the area," he said. "However, it will inevitably mean some inconvenience for motorists and we would ask that they are patient while these vital works are carried out."
